Write an in-depth managerial analysis of a selected organization, e.g., a corporation, company, firm or association (ideally, an organization which the students have some interest in joining as an employee, work already or within an industry of interest – public companies have most available information).
Topics to research and analyze with point breakdown: 20 points – Introduction: name of company, overview, competition, where business is conducted, company’s annual revenue and profits over past 5 years, growth over 5 years, return based on stock performance if public over the last 5 years, and why this company interests you. Provide some insight into how this company compares financially to a competitor and the outlook. Choose one competitor to highlight and compare against for the duration of the project.
80 points – Organization Structure: mission, goals, strategies, executive structure, leadership and management (centralized or decentralized) and style, culture, diversity, management and entrepreneurship priorities. Conduct online research on what it is like to work there, what analysts and employees say about the company. Explain how the company is managed and how that compares to the competitor.
50 points – Controls, Operations and Human Resources: analyze how this company measures and controls its finances, behavior and overall culture. State its focus on operations. Analyze the trend in human resources planning – hiring, firing, outsourcing, changes in leadership. Are there priorities in training and building managers and leadership? Is the company tightly managed or more entrepreneurial? How does all of it compare to the competition?
50 points – Feedback on Research: based on what you have researched, what do you think of the organizational structure, management, strategy, controls, culture and WHY? Is this still a company that you admire or would like to work for one day? WHY or WHY NOT? Is this how you would manage a company or department? WHY or WHY NOT? Is this company superior to competition or lagging?
