week 4

Answer the following two tasks in no less than 250 words. Cite any additional references in APA format. Post substantive comments on at least two other discussions. Viruses invade the cells of the body – causing damage and disease in the process. Viruses are intracellular parasites which cannot reproduce without using the host cell. They lack all the components to reproduce themselves and so they much “borrow” the host cell machinery in order to reproduce. This is different than intracellular bacteria which have all the necessary machinery to reproduce, even though they must do so while inside the host cell. Task 1: Viruses Provide an example of a virus which causes disease. DO NOT CHOOSE CORONAVIRUS OR INFLUENZA Describe the disease caused including where the virus resides/colonizes in the body. How does its preferred “residence” in the body influence the course and spread of the disease? Based on what you have learned about bacteria, viruses and components of living cells, do you consider viruses alive? Fully explain and support your answer. Are there vaccines developed for the chosen virus? What type of vaccine? How effective at preventing infection? Task 2: Bacterial Diseases Bacterial diseases that are of concern in the world today. Some of these are sporadic in nature while others are endemic and present all the time in certain areas. Choose one of the following: Streptococcal diseases (including Strep Throat, Scarlet fever and necrotizing fasciitis) Diphtheria Pertussis (whooping cough) Bacterial meningococcal meningitis Tuberculosis Legionellosis Botulism Staphylococcal food poisoning Salmonellosis Typhoid fever Cholera Enterohemorraghic E. coli diarrhea (EHEC) H. pylori caused peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer Listeriosis Rocky mountain spotted fever Anthrax (referring to the disease state and not the bioweapon) Tularemia Lyme disease Syphilis Gonorrhea Chlamydia (both conjunctivitis and STD) Hansen’s disease Provide the following information in your response: Provide a brief history of this disease. What is the cause of this disease? Briefly describe the organism (genus/species) and the mode of transmission. What is the epidemiology of this disease? What is the disease process in the human body? Are there any treatments Vaccines? If so, how do they target this specific disease? 8
