Electrolytes are essential electrically charged minerals with important functions in keeping homeostasis (Addis, 2018). Electrolytes have multiple functions including regulating fluid levels, providing the energy for movements such as muscle contractions, regulate the body’s pH levels, aid in blood clotting, regulate nerve function, and rebuild damaged tissue (Addis, 2018). There are some electrolytes that hold the most vital roles in the body as compared to others which are sodium, bicarbonate, potassium, chloride, calcium, and phosphate (Addis, 2018). If electrolytes are out of balance typically due to extreme loss of bodily fluids, there can be severe side effects. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headaches, myalgia, coma, seizures, and in extreme cases cardiac arrest (Addis, 2018). A lethal injection consists of injecting a large amount of potassium into the body which results in hyperkalemia (Sarat, 2021). The heart is affected and restricted from beating resulting in cardiac arrest and death (Sarat, 2021). Lethal injections without an anesthetic or sedative can cause severe pain and respiratory distress (Sarat, 2021). If lethal injections are administered without an anesthetic or sedative, then it is not humane whatsoever. Most lethal injections are administered with an anesthetic and a paralytic which if one agrees with the morality of the death penalty in general, then I guess it could be considered humane. There have been many instances of botched lethal injections and prisoners verbally reporting severe pain during the process, so it begs the question whether this process should be continued at all.

Electrolytes are minerals in your body that have an electric charge. They are in your blood, urine, tissues, and other body fluids. Some of the fucntions of electrolytes include balancing the amount of water in your body, balancing your body’s acid/base (pH) level, moving nutrients into the cells, and removing waste from the cells. They also make sure that your nerves, muscles, heart, and brain work the way they should. An electrolyte imbalance occurs when certain mineral levels in your blood get too high or too low. Symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance vary depending on the severity and electrolyte type, including weakness and muscle spasms. The electrolyte of potassium chloride is what causes the heart to stop. When the potassium reaches the inmate’s heart, it disrupts the delicate balance of sodium and potassium ions that keep the heart beating. The inmate’s heart would begin beating irregularly, then causing the heart to stop. In my opinion, I think that lethal injection is more humane than any other form of execution. Hanging a person, electrocuting a person, or dying by poisonous gas all seem very gruesome to me. Lethal injections wouldn’t be too painful or agonizing as the others would be.
