A comprehensive assessment in mental health social work is a collaborative exploration of the client’s life domains, including strengths and areas where there may be issues. Social workers also need a clear understanding of the social perspectives on mental health. A good therapeutic relationship is required with the client to gather relevant and accurate information, and as social workers, we also need to retain our critical lens whilst working in the medical model and respecting the client’s recovery experience.

1. Discuss the aspects of a person’s life explored in a biopsychosocial mental health assessment, and how these can be shaped by the social determinants of health. (Please see week 8 Lecture slides) A very clear discussion on biopsychosocial assessments. Very clear links to social determinants of health. (What we assess as SW: the social factors, problems and strengths… but in MH need to consider bio-medical factors also) Explain how Bio, physio and social domains in assessment and how are shaped by social determinants of health. Reading for SDH in week

2. Provide some examples e.g. How poverty impacts biological health, how homelessness impacts psychological health etc.) 2. Discuss the foundational requirements of a therapeutic relationship with clients, and how this can be impacted by involuntary treatment. (Discussion on foundational requirements of a therapeutic relationship. Important of being relational with the client Sound discussion on the impact of involuntary treatment.) (What we assess as SW: the social factors, problems and strengths… but in MH need to consider bio-medical factors also)

3. Discuss the importance of the recovery approach when working with clients with Mental health, and how this is situated within a critical social work perspective. A very clear discussion on the recovery approach in the MH sector. Solid discussion on the link to critical SW.
