research

For this assignment, you need to research and write a case study of a media organisation/company, somewhere you could apply to work in the future. The choice of company is up to you – you could focus on any of the following: a big legacy media organisation that operates across multiple media platforms, a smaller production company creating audio or video content, one of the big online platforms, a smaller app developer, an online design outfit, one of the big legacy news media operations, a magazine or digital publication, an online content creation outfit, an advertising agency, a PR company or a new start-up that creates promotional content for social/new media platforms. The key thing is that the company you focus on is involved in media work of some kind.

The submission date for this assignment is 1300 BST on Tuesday 2 May, and you will receive your feedback and marks by Tuesday 30 May.

NB If you do choose to focus on a big organisation like the BBC or Al Jazeera or Google, you need to identify a specific sector or division or service to analyse. You can’t just analyse the whole BBC or everything Al Jazeera or Google does.

Your case study should outline a brief history of the company you’re analysing and look at the kind of media work it does and the audiences it targets. Crucially, it should look at the organisation’s business model – how does it fund itself, how does it make money, where does its revenue come from. Use the knowledge you’ve gained from the first part of the module here. You should focus, in particular, on developing a critically informed perspective on how the organisation you’re analysing has changed what it does in response to the rise of online and digital media technologies and how it might change in future.

Your case study should also focus on the people who work for the company you’re analysing – or, rather, the kinds of jobs and career paths that are available there. Look, in particular at entry level jobs and placements and how you might find a way to work for this company.

This is not a purely academic assessment – you should draw on the academic research covered in the first half of the module. But you should also refer to industry research reports and surveys and relevant news reports and journalism about the company and the media sector it is part of. You don’t need to reference this material in an academic way – link to it in your case study and add a short bibliography at the end of the research and reading that has informed your work.
