Outside Source Requirement:
-You are required to have at least three (3) external scholarly sources, in addition to at least one (1) course reading (not including Edward Said’s work) to support your argument.
For your final essay you will choose one (1) written piece to analyze, applying a critical discourse analysis and other concepts you have learned in this course. The written piece you choose must be an outside source (not included in course materials). It can be a government policy document (local, provincial or federal – Canadian context only), journal article, book, book chapter, newspaper/magazine article, web article, poem, or piece of film transcript. However, the piece you choose must relate to or address any of the topics we will discuss in this course: issues of representation, identity, Indigeneity, anti-Black racism, gender, disability, race, queer sexuality, class, poverty, colonization, intersectionality, policy/politics, activism and/or social justice.
I have provided the two External Scholarly Sources below
Edward Said’s Claim:
As Edward Said (1979) writes in the introduction to his
book Orientalism, “European culture gained in strength and identity by setting itself off against
the Orient as a sort of surrogate and even underground self” (p. 3). Said also contends that
Orientalist discourse falsely produces the Orient as politically, socially and culturally inferior, so
that the authority and superiority of Western culture can be maintained.
In addition to relating the written piece to edward said’s claim and two external sources, I have also provided source content I would also like you to connect.
