APA Practice

Purpose:

You will demonstrate your growing skills at using APA format by making a mock article about a current news event.

Learning Goals:

A1. Exploring: explore topics related to the analysis of social change, and formulate questions to guide their research;

A4. Communicating and Reflecting: communicate the results of their research and inquiry clearly and effectively, and reflect on and evaluate their research, inquiry, and communication skills.

Task:

1. Choose a current news event from a reputable site, such as CBC, CNN, BBC etc.

2. Find the same story on 1 or 2 other reputable websites 

CNN Florida Panthers’ Staal brothers are latest NHL stars to refuse Pride jerseys, citing ‘religious beliefs’

CBC As NHL teams, players opt out of Pride Night events, concerns grow about league’s commitment to change

Sports Net Eric, Marc Staal refuse to wear Panthers’ Pride Night warmup jerseys

3. Create a 2 page paper which includes

a. A title page, properly done in APA format

b. The main body of your paper; a condensed version of your selected story, 1-2 pages in length, which cites at the 2-3 news sources you have used. You should use references regularly in the re-telling of your chosen story. (Yes this is essentially plagiarizing the original story, but for the purposes of the exercise, this is OK)

c. A references list or bibliography, which should also be done in APA format

4. The entire article should be in APA format. If you’re not sure how to format the paper, how to reference or anything else regarding APA format, check the class slides and watch the videos. Also check Purdue’s APA style guide, which got me through university.

5. Hand in this sheet with your report.you have used. You should use references regularly in the re-telling of your chosen story. (Yes this is essentially plagiarizing the original story, but for the purposes of the exercise, this is OK)
