Developmental Neurobiology Case Study

Choose one of the following and write a 3-4 page (4 page maximum) paper.Option 1: Part 1 (2-3 pages): Pretend you are a member of a jury for a murder trial. The defendant is a mother who has shown signs of schizophrenia for some years. She recently murdered some of her small children because she heard voices telling her it was necessary to “save their souls”. She acknowledged that at the time that society will think it was wrong, but felt compelled to do it so the children would not be “eternally dammed”. She is now on psychiatric medications and clear minded. The jury must decide if she meets the criteria for being “not criminally responsible” due to a mental disorder or criminally responsible. Using what you have learned about schizophrenia and how the disorder affects the brain, present the facts to help the jury make an informed decision. Be sure to properly cite any relevant research or the DVD content. Note: a person knowing right from wrong is just one part of this decision. Part 2 (1 page): Throughout this course you have been asked to consider how an understanding of biology of the brain impacts our thinking and decisions. Discuss key points you’ve gained in this course has affected you or changed some aspects of your world view, and what will you want to remember for use in the future? OROption 2:Part 1 (2-3 pages): Your local community center is designing new programs for adults age 55 and older. They are considering activities targeted toward older adults that include a combination of physical exercise and learning activities. Discuss some specific suggestions they might include and explain why physical and mental activities are important. Connect your answers to your knowledge of brain health, mental and physical activity, and late adulthood. Be sure to properly cite any relevant research or the DVD content. Part 2 (1 page): Throughout this course you have been asked to consider how an understanding of biology of the brain impacts our thinking and decisions.
