ART 110 – Art Appreciation University of Mount Olive Assignment 7A Student Learning Outcomes The student will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the concepts of art and its vocabulary; to differentiate the various types of visual art, the major styles of visual art, between media used in visual art and to complete a critical analysis for a work of art. Instructions Review pages 563-691 of the text, Gateways to Art, Understanding the Visual Arts (Third Edition) as directed below and complete the assignment. In Part 4 of the text, you will find a number of Themes. • Art and Community • Spirituality and Art • Art and the Cycle of Life • Art and Science • Art, Illusion, and Transformation • Art of Political Leaders and Rulers • Art, War, and Revolution • Art of Protest and Social Conscience • The Body of Art • Identity, Race, and Gender in Art Spend some time reviewing the various themes and choose the one of most interest to you. Write a paper as follows. You should end up with five paragraphs. Each of these paragraphs must be thorough, well-developed. • Paragraph One: Summarize Theme Summarize what the text says about the theme. (20 points) • Paragraph Two: Formal Analysis using Elements of Art Choose one work of art in the section (theme) and write a formal critical analysis of the work using the Elements of Art. Review Formal Analysis on pages 170-172 of the text before beginning. This means that you must address each and every Element of Art in one paragraph. Please do not underestimate the quality of work required for this section. (25 points) • Paragraph Three: Formal Analysis using the Principles of Art Using the same work of art discussed in paragraph two, write a formal critical analysis of the work using the Principles of Art. Review Formal Analysis on pages 170-172 of the text before beginning. This means that you must address each and every principle of art in one paragraph. Please do not underestimate the quality of work required for this section. (25 points) • Paragraph Four: Summarize the “Voice” Summarize how the piece you have chosen gives “voice” to the theme or how the work of art addresses the theme. (15 points) • Paragraph Five: Your Response to the Work Write about your response to the work. This is your opinion about the piece. (15 points) Use Times New Roman, 12 point, single space. No page minimum required.
